Tips on Furniture Arranging

Consider the following tips when planning your room

  • Ear, mouth relationships & the 8 feet rule
When guest are seated more than 8 feet apart, communication can be difficult. In a larger room, consider using two small groupings of furnishings instead of one grouping that is spread out around the room.

  • 18 inches is enough!
If room space is at a premium, allow only 18 inches between the front edge of a chair or sofa and a cocktail table. This amount is sufficient for leg room and the table is close enough to enjoy a cup of tea!

  • Mind your manners ! Attendant surface for each chair
It is courteous to have a surface within arms reach of each seat to give guest a place to sit their drink or refreshments.

  • Clear the way, we're comin' through!
Minimum passageway for one person is 22 inches and minimum passageway for two people is 36 inches. If the area is a major traffic pattern, allow at least 36 inches.

  • When you're ready maestro!
A grand piano bench should be no less than 3 feet from the wall.

  • Please don't make me strain my neck
Give careful attention when hanging art on a wall. Seated eye level is 38 to 42 inches and standing eye level is 5 feet to 5 feet 3 inches.

  • It's all about the focal point
When arranging furniture in a room, center the furniture by the focal point. Sometimes architecture dictates this and almost always a structure such as a fireplace becomes the focal point of the room. Make certain wherever furniture is positioned, that it addresses the focal point.

  • Careful- - back with caution!
Leave enough space between a dining table and the wall or furniture that surrounds the table. This distance should be minimum of 36 inches when passage is needed and 30 inches when only seating space is needed with no passage.

  • Some elbow room, please
One person needs a minimum of 24 inches of width and 12 inches of depth to dine.

  • Nap time!
Twin beds need 30 inches of clearance between them and 18 inches between the wall and side of the bed.

  • Getting dressed
It is important to leave 36 inches of clearance in front of a chest of drawers. If your closet is not a walk-in one, leave a 42 inch diameter circle that is clear for dressing purposes. It is nice to have a mirror and a seating area nearby.

  • Here comes the sun!
Many fabrics such as silks are overly sensitive to light and deteriorate easily. If your room gets direct sunlight, give careful consideration to furniture placement. Blinds, sheers, window treatments, & window coatings can help.
